1.How are translations priced?

Translations are priced per 1000 words of the target language. A computer word count is performed on the translated document and multiplied by the rate for that language combination. Any urgency surcharges are communicated to the client before the work is undertaken. Your invoice will break down the exact number of the words and the applicable rate. A minimum charge is set for small documents of up to 300 words.

2. How quickly can things be turned round?

This depends very much on the nature of the document and the language combination. A turn around of 2,000 words per day is standard for most languages, but this can be doubled for certain combinations such as French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and Russian to English. 24/7 Translations always endeavours to meet even the tightest of deadlines and is regularly able to perform "miracles" thanks to a dedicated team of translators.

 

3. What details should I convey to 24/7 when making an enquiry?

For a quotation, 24/7 needs to know:

  • - language combination - number of words / pages
  • - general subject area
  • - deadline

On receiving the above information we will be able to give you an estimate of price and time. This can be confirmed on seeing the document in question.

 

4. What does 24/7 need from me if I want to proceed with a translation?

24/7 will require either a Purchase Order or a note on your company letterhead. If you would like us to include your reference on the invoice, please include that on your confirmation.

 

5. What are the invoicing/payment terms?

24/7 will invoice you within 1 week of returning the work. Payment terms are 30 days from the date of the invoice. Invoices can be settled by cheque or BACS.

 

6. Will my translation need editing?

24/7 will provide you with a translation carried out by a qualified professional translator. Clients must however be aware that translation is not a precise art. There are many ways of expressing things and therefore we always recommend that when translating out of English, your end users or foreign contacts read through the translation. They may want to make amendments according to their own in-house terminology or to perform a copywriting function. We stress that translators are linguists and faithfully render the source text to their own mother tongue. They are not copywriters and cannot rewrite texts to make them sound better. If the source text is poor, it is likely that the translation will also reflect this. A translator cannot make a good translation from a bad source text.

8. Will my computer be able to read the translation with all its accents/special characters?

If your computer has Windows 95 or above installed and MS Office 95 or above, you will be able to read all European languages including Russian and Greek. You must however ensure that your language support is enabled. To enable this function, go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Windows Set-up, then check the multi-language support box. You may need to insert the Windows CD at this stage. Then reboot your computer and you will find that your computer is now a polyglot, being able to read Polish, Czech, Hungarian, Bulgarian, Swedish etc etc.

Of course, there are some exceptions to the rule! The following languages are not readable by Windows or Office without specific software: - Arabic - Farsi - Chinese - Japanese - Korean - Indian Languages. We get round this problem by sending these languages as .pdf files which can be read by Adobe Acrobat. A free version of this can be downloaded from the Internet. Alternatively, there is always fax or post to fall back on.

 

9. What if my document is too large to Email or fax?

If you would like an estimate for a very large document, please fax through a few sample pages representative of the text. An indication of price and timing can be given from this. 24/7 will send a courier to pick up any large volume documentation within a 10 mile radius or we can organise an overnight pick up.

10. What is machine translation? Does it work?

Fortunately, human beings have not been replaced as far as translation is concerned! 24/7 does not use machine translations simply because they are not good enough. They are designed to aid very basic understanding and are light years away from producing anything meaningful.
